Every feature, honestly listed
What Cloud gives you, what Oikos AI does, the complete bookkeeping core (also free on desktop), and the short list of things we don't do yet. No asterisks, no "contact sales."
Cloud: your books everywhere Available now
The whole bookkeeping core (further down), on every device, plus the connected pieces.
- Every deviceSame books on your desktop, laptop, and phone (install it from the browser, no app store). Automatic backup with version history.
- Bank feedsConnect a bank and posted transactions import on their own, pre-sorted for you to confirm. Runs on Stripe Financial Connections; your bank sign-in happens inside Stripe, and we ask for transactions only, never your balances. Statement import still works if you would rather not connect.
- Get paid onlinePay links on invoices; payments land in your books automatically, reminders include the link.
- Invite your accountant or partnerView-only or can-post-adjustments access. They don't need their own subscription.
- Your team on one planInvite the people who run the business with you. They work in the same books, covered by the company's subscription, so nobody buys a second one.
- More than one businessSeveral businesses on one login and one bill, each with its own separate books. The first is $45 a month, a second and third are $25 each.
- Version history and restoreEvery save keeps the version before it. Roll a set of books back to an earlier point if something goes wrong.
- Email from the appInvoices, statements, and reminders sent for real, not just printed.
- Online givingFor churches: hosted giving pages, recurring gifts, campaign thermometers, refunds handled.
Oikos AI: included, and it does the typing
Part of Cloud at no extra cost. There is no AI tier to buy.
- Just say it"Just spent $34 on gas" is booked to the right category, one tap to confirm.
- Snap a receiptPhoto → vendor, date, amount, category, with the image saved to the expense.
- Ask your books anything"What did I spend on materials this quarter?" Plain-English answers from your own numbers.
- Auto-categorizeBank and statement imports arrive pre-sorted; you just confirm.
- Set up by describing your business"Wedding photographer" → a chart of accounts that fits, not a generic template.
The whole bookkeeping core, in Cloud and the free desktop app
Everything below is in the Cloud plan AND the free desktop app. Real double-entry accounting runs invisibly underneath all of it. One honest note: the desktop app ships on its own release train, so the newest of these reach Cloud first and the download a little later.
- Invoices & estimatesCreate, PDF, email, recurring invoices, estimates that convert, credit memos, refunds on paid invoices, customer statements.
- Customer deposits & retainersTake money before the job. Held correctly (not counted as income early), applied to the invoice in one click, refundable.
- Expenses & billsRecord spending, enter bills to pay later, recurring bills, vendor credits, and vendor refunds booked right. Typo? Void it and the books correct themselves.
- Credit cards & transfersEvery card gets its own account, spends everywhere, and reconciles against its own statement. Move money between accounts and pay the card down without faking an expense.
- Personal and business money, untangledPaid a business cost on your personal card? Books tracks what the business owes you and pays you back. Split the 60% business phone bill exactly; the rest books as a draw.
- Overdue-invoice chasingA "needs chasing" list with friendly reminders, capped and cadenced so no customer is ever harassed.
- Reports in plain EnglishProfit & Loss (cash or accrual), Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, Trial Balance, aging, budgets vs. actual, profit by project, all with click-through to the transactions behind any number.
- Bank reconciliationMatch your statement, reconcile to the penny, cleared entries lock so history can't drift. Finished against the wrong balance? Undo it and redo it.
- Sales tax & 1099sCharge tax, pay the state right from the app, and read the by-month numbers your return asks for. One-click 1099-NEC prep for contractors.
- Payroll recording & importRecord runs by hand or import the register file from whichever payroll provider you use; books and tax liabilities stay right. Provider-agnostic by design, so switching payroll providers does not change how this works.
- Entity & tax setupSole prop, LLC, S-corp, partnership, or nonprofit: the right equity accounts, your federal form, and a state-aware setup checklist.
- Tax worksheetYour numbers in the exact order TurboTax asks for them. Tax season in about 20 minutes.
- Business partnersReal capital accounts per owner, draws and contributions in two clicks, expenses a partner covered personally tracked and paid back, and an Owners / K-1 report split to the penny.
- Inventory, time & jobsStock with automatic cost-of-goods, billable hours that become invoices, and per-job profit.
- Departments, locations, classes & projectsTag anything with the dimensions your business actually has, then slice any report by them.
- LoansSet a loan up once and record its payments. Each payment splits itself into interest and principal, so the liability comes down correctly and the interest lands in your P&L.
- Close the monthLock a finished month so posted history can't quietly change. Books shows you what's still unresolved before it lets you close.
- Rules, and a review queueTeach it that a vendor always means a category and it does it every time after. Anything it still can't place waits in one short "needs a category" list instead of getting lost.
- Fixed assetsTrack equipment and post straight-line depreciation automatically.
- Switch from QuickBooksDrop the file in and Books works out what it is: customers, vendors, your chart, opening balances, and your full general ledger with years of history. Reads CSV, Excel, tab-delimited, and IIF.
- Proof the migration landedAfter an import, Books ties your new numbers out against QuickBooks' own reports, so you can see the balances match rather than take our word for it.
- Guided opening balancesComing across with no usable export? A step-by-step path gets your starting balances in by hand, correctly.
- Accountant packOne click bundles every report a preparer needs, including a tax-mapped summary grouped by the lines on your return.
- Churches & nonprofitsFunds, giving, donor statements, campaigns, and Form 990 framing, built in, not bolted on.
- Your data, yoursBackup and export everything, any time, in both Cloud and the desktop app. The free app works fully offline and keeps your books as a file on your own machine. Where your data lives →
What we don't do (yet)
- Built-in full-service payroll. Today: record runs by hand or import the register file from any provider, and the books stay perfect. That import-only approach is the design, not a stopgap, and it is provider-agnostic on purpose. Fully built-in payroll (taxes filed, direct deposit) is on the roadmap; we'll partner for it when the economics work for a product our size, and we'd rather tell you that straight than name a partner or promise a date we don't have.
- Filing your taxes. By design. The tax worksheet and accountant pack make filing fast, but the return is filed by you or your preparer, never silently by software.
- Advanced inventory. No assemblies or FIFO/LIFO; Books uses average cost. If you manufacture kits, we're honestly not your tool yet.
- Automated sales-tax filing. We prep it; a filing rail via a specialist partner is on the roadmap.
